Too Little Too Late These are real-life situations where our advice was sought too late: Domain Name Duplication A prominant artist had a website that was achieving good visibility in search engines as a result of our work. A few months later we received a call from our client to say their visibility on search engines had dropped off drastically - they could no longer be found for their main keywords. After asking our client numerous questions to ascertain the problem, we found they had bought an additional domain name (just because they liked the sound of it), and now the website was also displaying from this domain name - effectively 2 identical websites! The search engines do not favour website duplication, and as a result their website was penalised! Unknowingly Spamming the Search Engines A prominant Australian travel website engaged our services to get them to rank high in search results. They subsequently engaged another company on the pretence that they are best employing numerous strategies to maximise their visibility. We were asked by our client to review their rankings and report any improvements that could be made. After a quick search on Google, it was evident that the other Australian search engine marketing company (a very large influential publicly listed Australian IT company) had created a micro-site for our client as part of their strategy. Little did our client know that search engines frown upon micro-sites! Unfortunately we can't publicise the name of this Melbourne-based company, but you can read some further information at http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=10680 Visitors Stuck in a Site A client recently decided to move their web design in-house. In doing so, they completely changed the structure of their website such that it was designed in 'frames'. Visitors who find their website in a search engine now can become 'stuck' in the site, unable to see the other frames that would let them navigate around the website. Their business through search engines will now effectively be nil. |
